Cherry Blossom Race Results

From Bob, Race Director:
Here are the Cherry Festival Run/Walk results. It was a nice day for an earlier morning run. A good turnout! We had runners from Minnesota, Rhode Island, Virginia, Idaho, California, Washington, and, of course, Oregon. Probably 50% of our runners and walkers are from out of town.

Race Results – St. Patrick’s Day Run

With a cool spring Mid Columbia temperature of 47 degrees and a slight breeze at the 10 am race time, over 170 participants headed out on the river trail seeking their own personal fitness challenge. This year’s St. Patty’s day race was, as each year, the final of three Winter races offered to folks during the winter months. Many folks that attended New Years weekend’s, Freeze Your Gizzard Blizzard race, then a month later the Valentine’s race ending with our St. Patty’s event overlooking the Columbia River.

All course records for this race, were secured for another year except in the men’s 10k race, where Portlander, Joe Dudman’s 2008 record of 34:12 was shattered by local high school standout, Alex Dillard in a time of 31:37. Alex, coming off a recent indoor 5k meet (running for the University of Portland) PR of 14:43, was able to take his running to the trail in a longer event. After the race Alex commented on, “the breeze was working against me on the way out and my splits were generally faster on the way back, it was nice to open up on a longer race today.”

There were 17 elementary district 21 students that attended today’s race”, said race director, Tom Conklin. The physical education specialists at Dry Hollow, Chenowith and Colonel Wright Elementary schools have been synching their curriculum the past several years. “We are trying to get the younger age kids in our classrooms, from our district, to take their physical fitness beyond the gym to community events like these, so that they can see the fun and joy of older adults partaking in a fun event such as these three races. Our D21 elementary kids get into these events at no charge. It’s a “carrot on the stick” approach for our students.” The CDC (Center for Disease Control) in 1996, found that adults who exercised in any form influenced the youth in their care up to 66%.

In the bigger picture, the entire elementary set, from all over the Columbia Gorge can compete in the Jumpstart Fall Cross country races held on the last Thursday of each September at Sorrosis Park, which is another extension of our District 21 elementary physical education fitness curriculum. In the spring, the three elementary schools host their annual Jumpstart elementary Track meet. These events are all extensions of the D21 elementary physical education programs, and open to all elementary students even beyond our three elementary schools. These events are supported by Dry Hollow PTA, Colonel Wright PTO and Jumpstart fund raising events like these trail runs. Community sponsors like Devco Mechanical and Casa El Mirador have been solid supporters to these community events and that makes affordability possible for many folks.

Funds raised at this event go to four areas:

  1. A long time local runner’s wife has been battling cancer for the last 8 years, so a portion of the funds will be offered to that family
  2. Jumpstart Summer Basketball Camp scholarship fund.
  3. Physical Education department at Colonel Wright Elementary School.
  4. Fall Elementary XC races & Spring Elementary Track Meet

** UPDATED TO ADD **

There will be a 2nd Annual Virtual Run for Sherry on February 9, 2013. You can print your bib from Races2Remember. To get even more information, visit Beth’s site Shut Up & Run. Please consider participating and help bring even more awareness to what the running community can do to be safe and aware.

Most of Run the Gorge readers might know the story of Sherry’s untimely death, but if you haven’t here  is a brief summary:

On January 7, 2012, Sherry Arnold, age 43 and a mother of two, left her house in the small town of Sidney, Montana at 6:30 a.m. for an early morning run. Sherry often ran within the town limits and January 7 was no exception. When Sherry did not come home later that morning, however, her husband began to worry. He called the police and a search ensued. By 3:00 p.m. hundreds of volunteers were searching for Sherry and only one clue had been found, Sherry’s right Brooks running shoe.

For several days there was no sign of Sherry. On the seventh day, a tip was received on the FBI’s tip line that led to the arrest of two men, one in North Dakota and one in South Dakota. One of the men confessed to killing Sherry. She had been abducted and killed at 6:40 a.m., only about a mile from her house. Reports indicate that the two men had been using drugs while driving from Colorado to Montana to find work. They decided to find and kill a woman when they got to Montana. As the report goes, Sherry ran by their parked car and said, “Hi.” Then, she was grabbed and choked, dying immediately.

Sherry’s body was finally found on March 21, 2012, in a shallow grave near Williston, North Dakota. The two suspects have been incarcerated in Sidney since they were arrested. This week, state District Judge Richard Simonton set trial dates of November 4, 2013 and and January 6, 2014. Each suspect faces one count of deliberate homicide and attempted kidnapping. Prosecutors have said they intend to seek the death penalty if the defendants are convicted.
